We live in a consumer society where the accumulation of possessions can become problematic. Indeed, a cluttered environment often leads to a cluttered mind. Minimalism is a lifestyle that can allow us to see things more clearly and help us make better decisions, both in our personal and professional lives. If you’re reading this article, chances are the topic of minimalism interests you. Good, because that’s what we’ll be discussing in the following lines. More specifically, we’ll look at how to adopt a minimalist lifestyle and its benefits.
I’m passionate about personal development and I like to question our way of life. Minimalism is a subject I’m fond of for several reasons. If you’re wondering about this excess material around you or you want to move towards a simpler and more peaceful life, this article is for you.
What is minimalism?
First of all, before discussing the reasons why adopting a minimalist lifestyle is beneficial and lightens the mind, I will remind you what we mean by the term minimalism .
VOLUNTARY SIMPLICITY
Minimalism as a lifestyle is also called voluntary simplicity. This term simply means ” living better with less ” and directly alludes to consumption and its various impacts. While this topic is in vogue these days, this movement is very old. Indeed, Epicurus, the Greek philosopher, already praised it. He invited us to discern the superfluous from the essential. Moreover, in the West, Christian monastic movements, under the influence of Saint Francis of Assisi in particular, advocated a simple life. As a result, self-sufficiency was practiced there. In the East, minimalism or voluntary simplicity is found in Buddhism and Hinduism, and Gandhi’s life is an example of simplicity.
THE MINIMALIST LIFESTYLE TODAY
Minimalism is not new, nor is it new. However, we are hearing a lot about it these days, and it is a trend that is gaining momentum. In fact, just yesterday, during a dinner with friends, the subject came up. My friend said he was increasingly detaching himself from material goods. In fact, minimalism today in the West is a normal reaction to rebalance a society that is too focused on material things. In other words, after experiencing material abundance and its excesses, current generations are reacting in the opposite way. So to speak, in a society where consumption is constantly encouraged and whose effects are harmful in many ways, adopting a minimalist lifestyle is an act of rebellion. Therefore, this way of life invites us to rethink our way of consuming , and therefore also of producing.
MINIMALISM AND ART
If art approaches minimalism, this is not insignificant in my opinion. Art has always existed and responds to a need for creation for man. Moreover, men contemplate and appreciate works of art and this is done in different ways depending on the art in question. Indeed, this appreciation of art passes through one or more of our 5 senses. To put it simply, it is through our senses that we communicate with our subconscious.
